Terms of use

Separate terms for citizens and regulator portal staff. You must accept the applicable version before receiving a sign-in link.

These Terms of Use govern your use of regulation.nz as a citizen or member of the public, including browsing the directory, signing in, filing OIA requests and complaints, AI consultation, and application submission.

Version 1.0 · Effective August 2026

1. About regulation.nz

regulation.nz is an independent public-interest platform mapping New Zealand regulatory bodies. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any New Zealand government agency.

By requesting a sign-in link, using My Account, or paying for services, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy.

2. Eligibility and account access

You must provide a valid email address you control. Sign-in uses single-use magic links valid for 15 minutes. You are responsible for activity under your email address until you sign out or we terminate access.

3. Free services

Browsing the regulator directory, filing Official Information Act requests, formal complaints, privacy requests, and appeals through regulation.nz are free. We do not charge a platform fee to hold regulators to account.

4. Paid services — AI consultation and applications

AI consultation unlocks structured regulatory mapping and application preparation. The consultation fee and card processing are disclosed on the checkout form before you pay.

Application charges include government filing fees (passed through at cost) plus a platform service component. You authorise each application before submission.

Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store full card numbers.

  • Consultation fees are one-off — no subscription.
  • Refund eligibility is described on our refund page and FAQ.
  • Government filing fees already remitted follow each regulator's own refund rules.

5. Not legal advice

regulation.nz provides information, facilitation, and AI-assisted drafting. It does not provide legal, financial, or professional advice. For Tribunal hearings, judicial review, or complex disputes, use professional escalation or independent legal counsel.

6. AI-generated content

AI outputs are based on published regulator data and your inputs. You must review all drafts before submission. AI may be incorrect or incomplete for edge cases. You remain the submitter of all correspondence and applications.

7. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • Scrape, bulk-download, or redistribute directory data without written permission.
  • Use the platform for unlawful, harassing, or fraudulent purposes.
  • Attempt to bypass payment, access controls, or rate limits.
  • Impersonate another person or regulator.
  • Submit false or malicious OIA requests or complaints.

8. Directory accuracy and third-party regulators

Contact details are verified periodically but may become outdated. Always confirm with a regulator's official website before acting. When you Engage a regulator through regulation.nz, your information is forwarded to that regulator under their own policies.

9. Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by New Zealand law, regulation.nz is provided "as is". We do not guarantee approval outcomes, response times from regulators, or uninterrupted service. Our liability for any claim arising from use of the platform is limited to the fees you paid to us in the 12 months before the claim.

10. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and disclose personal information under the Privacy Act 2020. By using the platform you acknowledge that policy.

11. Changes

We may update these Terms. Material changes to paid-service terms are disclosed at checkout before your next payment. Continued use after notice constitutes acceptance where permitted by law.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.

13. Contact

Questions about these Terms: use the Contact form. Do not rely on unsolicited email addresses — we respond only through official site channels.
